So like the rest of Canada, Calgary is under another blanket of snow and our driving skills are being tested once again. With many not passing with flying colours I might add! Practice, practice, practice:)
Anyways, I got home from coaching at the box this morning and started in on the pile of snow that was once my driveway and sidewalks.(neighbours and my own) After about getting half of it piled up my shoulders were feeling like someone was holding a blow torch to the both of them and I was getting a little miffed. After taking a short break I thought to myself, this is just mother nature/lifes way of trying to help keep people in shape. Throwing in these impromptu workouts, or as I call it, a WOD!
So with a small grin beginning to grow at the corners of my mouth, I dug in and finished the second half for time!
Quite often, more times than not, we take the elevator rather than the stairs. The flat escalator in the airports instead of walking the distance. Take 10 minutes trying to find that parking spot that is two stalls closer to the grocery store rather than walking an extra 30 feet. Getting that young boy to carry your groceries out to your care even though you are an able bodied individual. Driving to the mail box rather than walking over to get your mail. Even choosing to get someone else to fill your car up instead of getting off your butt to do it yourself.
You see there is many impromptu WODs that pop up in our everyday life that we seem to turn a blind eye to and take the easy way out. You can tell yourself what ever you would like for an excuse. "I will get a bit sweaty," "my knees are too sore," "I don't have time," "I am too out of shape," and my favourite, " I am too OLD!" I was once told that excuses are like assholes, everybody has got one! That I find is a very true statement, but it is YOU that makes the decision to use one.
The day I heard that, was the day that I decided to bite my tongue every time an excuse was thinking of slipping out of my mouth. Do not let your own excuses for not being active cripple you. Take those stairs every day and try to do them faster each time. Park at the other end of the parking lot and make a few trips carrying your bags. Hell, carry your own groceries and help someone out with theirs. Challenge yourself in each one of your everyday endeavours, no matter how small they are. Great walls are not built in one day and by one brick, they are constructed over time with lots of little bricks. So let these everyday challenges build you up rather than break you down. It is easier than you think.
You do not stop playing because you get old........you get old because you stop playing.
PS: I finished the second half of the driveway faster:-) Carpe Diem
